Council members receive calendars featuring photos from Eugene Melnyk's African safari

City council members received a special delivery from Eugene Melnyk on Tuesday: a 2019 calendar featuring pictures from his African safari.

It was the same day Melnyk was being countersued for $1 billion in a legal dust-up with his LeBreton Flats development partner, John Ruddy, who’s a defendant in Melnyk’s $700-million lawsuit.

The calendar, featuring animal pictures from Melnyk’s family safari in South Africa, includes a message from the Ottawa Senators owner and his two daughters.

“What a great year 2018 was and now we welcome a New Year,” the message says alongside a picture of Melnyk.

Each photo is accompanied by some interesting facts about the animal. For example, the calendar says rhinos can’t see well, but they smell their prey, and the zebra has a unique pattern of black and white stripes.

The calendar has Canadian, U.S. and Barbadian special days.

It also includes a reminder about Melnyk’s birthday — May 27, in case anyone wants to send him a card.
