Seven new Ottawa city councillors recently took their places at city hall. We invited each to outline their priorities. Today: Matthew Luloff, new councillor for Orléans, shares his community-building plan.
I am humbled and pleased to have been elected in October to represent the incredible community of Orléans. We ran on a platform of “Building Together: Building our community, building our economy and building support for those who serve Canadians.” Here is my plan for the next four years:
Building our community: We need to relieve the pressure on commuters. Ensuring light rail arrives at Trim Road Station by 2022 is imperative. We must provide enough parking for those looking for a convenient commute. We are running an infrastructure deficit in the East End and we need to widen the 174 and add a southern route in and out of our community.

I want to foster a creative hub in the East End by bringing more original arts and culture to our community. I want to create a space for artists to collaborate and grow and in partnership with our arts community, I’d like to showcase the incredible local talent we have. I would like to help create a musical instrument-lending program at the Ottawa Public Library so that we can remove barriers to participation.
Everyone should be able to enjoy the beach at Petrie Island, regardless of physical ability. I will work to make it more accessible.
Building our economy: I want to help attract jobs and investment to Orléans and encourage employment close to home. In collaboration with all levels of government, local entrepreneurs and community partners, I will work to ensure Orléans develops into an attractive place for employers and entrepreneurs. We already know that our community has incredible potential: a bilingual workforce, incredible green spaces, access to major transportation corridors and commercial space ripe for redevelopment.
We must keep our community affordable so that it remains a top destination to start a family. I will support keeping our taxes low and predictable to help our seniors, families and businesses plan for the future.
Our francophone heritage must be respected and celebrated. I will support projects like the Mouvement d’implication francophone d’Orléans (MIFO) expansion and advocate for services in both official languages.
Building support for those who serve Canadians: Orléans is home to thousands of first responders, veterans, military members, public servants and their families and they deserve our care and respect.
I will advocate for more health care close to home and work alongside all levels of government to ensure the new Orléans Health Hub moves forward.
I will also advocate for mental health initiatives and leverage partnerships to work toward ending the stigma surrounding mental health injuries and illnesses.

I’d be remiss not to thank Bob Monette for his years of service to our community. He worked tirelessly on our behalf, and will be dearly missed. I want to build on his successes. Together, we will work to make Orléans an even better place to live, work and play. Travaillons ensemble afin de réaliser le plein potentiel de notre communauté.
